Deported to a country that is not their own: the human cost of expulsions to third countries

For decades, deportation in the United States was understood as returning a person to their country of origin. However, an increasingly used immigration policy under the Trump administration after his second arrival at the White House is transforming that practice; thousands of immigrants who sought protection in the United States are no longer necessarily being sent to their countries of nationality, but rather to third countries with which the U.S. government has established migration cooperation agreements.
