The perilous sea crossing to the United States remains, for thousands of people, more than just an option: for many, it has become the only possible path to try to achieve the coveted “American Dream.” Although the number of maritime interdictions cannot be compared to the scale of encounters at the southern border, the persistence of these journeys demonstrates that the maritime route remains active and deeply linked to desperation, precariousness, and a lack of safe alternatives.
